A San Jose man was arrested after a police drone with a thermal imaging camera located him at the scene of a construction site burglary in Redwood City, authorities said Wednesday.

Miguel Antonio Pargaz, 43, was taken into custody about 11:10 p.m. May 6 and accused of commercial burglary, possession of burglary tools and obstructing a peace officer, police said.

A private security company alerted police after motion-activated surveillance detected someone illegally entering the construction site in the 500 block of East Bayshore Road.

The police department’s unmanned aerial vehicle — acting as what is known as Drone as First Responder — arrived on scene ahead of ground units.

“Due to the size of the property and limited lighting conditions, the drone operator utilized a thermal imaging camera to quickly locate the suspect within the site,” police said.

The suspect, noticing the drone, attempted to flee on foot toward a nearby marsh, police said.

“The drone maintained continuous visual tracking, allowing responding officers to coordinate their approach and safely take the suspect into custody,” police said.

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Redwood City Police Department at (650) 780-7100.
