The Redwood City Improvement Association has partnered with Fung Collaboratives to showcase its newest public art installation at the Art Kiosk in Courthouse Square from now until Oct. 1, 2023.
The latest installation, titled All Eyes on You!, comes from Berkay Bugdan, one of Turkey’s most prominent Contemporary artists.
All Eyes on You! was created in collaboration with the children of community-based organization CASA Circulo Cultural.
The art installation features 18 painted masks that have been augmented by robotics. Bugdan says that the art piece’s aim is to serve as a commentary regarding the conflicting ideas of playful interaction and the uneasiness of being watched.
“While empty masks often invoke an uncanny feeling, with children's creativity and personality shining through they become odd and interesting reflections of the human psyche looking back at the viewer,” said Bugdan.
“The sudden jolt of realizing you are being watched is likely a shared experience for all. Considering that with modern technology and institutions, the mechanisms of surveillance have grown to previously unimaginable capabilities. That jolt is quickly becoming a societal issue.”
The rotation of exhibits at the Art Kiosk, located at 2208 Broadway St., is part of the Redwood City Improvement Association’s ongoing effort to enhance the community’s fine art scene for residents and visitors alike.
