Redwood City will host the 12th Annual Lunar New Year Celebration at the Courthouse Square on Saturday, Feb 4, and all are invited.
The free event will celebrate this year's Lunar New Year with many performances and activities.
Enjoy live performances by lion dancers (a traditional dance in Chinese culture), taiko drummers, martial artists, and various other performances, according to the city.
Attendees will be admitted to the San Mateo County History Museum free of charge. The museum will host free arts and crafts activities for children.
Lunar New Year is a celebration of the coming of spring, and it marks the start of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. Each year features a Chinese zodiac animal that represents specific characteristics in Chinese culture. Each respective zodiac animal's year comes around every 12 years. This year's Lunar New Year event will celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, which is the zodiac sign last honored in 2011. The previous year's zodiac animal was the tiger.
"… The Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays in Asian heritage, often celebrated with big family gatherings, gift giving, the eating of symbolic foods, and displays of festive decorations – all focused on bringing good luck for the New Year and celebrating the imminent arrival of spring," the City of Redwood City said on its Lunar New Year event page. "Thank you for joining us in Redwood City to celebrate the diversity of our community."
