Three members of the Redwood City Legion Post 105 have been announced as honorees for the upcoming 7th Annual Veterans Recognition Luncheon, an event hosted by the San Mateo County Veterans Commission.

Three members of the Redwood City Legion Post 105 have been announced as honorees for the upcoming 7th Annual Veterans Recognition Luncheon, an event hosted by the San Mateo County Veterans Commission.

The luncheon event will be honoring individuals that are dedicated to assisting veterans, as well as organizations that promote veteran causes.

George Smith, who is currently serving as post commander for the American Legion 105, has been announced as the 2022 Veteran of the Year by the San Mateo County Veterans Commission.

Smith is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and has served in Vietnam. According to the event press release, Smith will be honored for the volunteer work he has taken part in on behalf of veterans and veteran causes.

Most notably, Smith has worked to ensure that final honors were given to veterans at the funerals of all Marines in the San Mateo, San Francisco, Sacramento and Marin counties, as per request.

In addition to Smith, two other members of the Redwood City Legion Post 105 will be honored at the event.

Legion Post 105's Wendy Weller and Andrew Trapani have been announced as Patriots of the Year honorees for their volunteer work that "embodies the patriot spirit," according to the press release.

Both Weller and Trapani participated in over 148 Final Honors funerals for veterans and their families, where Weller and Trapani would assist them during their time of grief.

On top of this, as members of the Patriot Guard Riders, Warrior Watch Riders and the American Legion Riders, both Weller and Trapani have also dedicated about 1,200 hours a year to escorting veterans to their final resting places and honoring them at the end with a flag line.

Other honors that will be awarded at the luncheon event will be the Enterprise of the Year, which will be awarded to the Veterans Surf Alliance, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award that will be presented to Congresswoman Jackie Speier.

The luncheon will take place on Thursday, November 10, 2022, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The location of the event will be at the Westin San Francisco Airport in Millbrae.

Tickets for the event can be found here.
