San Mateo County residents are encouraged to take more COVID-19 precautions as the county has moved to a higher-risk category, according to the announcement this week by the county.

In light of increasing hospitalizations in San Mateo and San Francisco counties, and higher demand on local health care systems, the county has been elevated from Medium/Yellow to the High/Red COVID-19 Community Level category. The county is following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC determines the Community Level category by calculating a county's case rate, the amount of new COVID-19 hospital admissions in the region, as well as the percentage of in-patient beds that are in use by patients who have tested positive for the disease.

To address rising case numbers, the CDC has encouraged residents to wear a mask indoors in public spaces, as well as on public transportation. Officials also recommend staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, getting tested immediately at the onset of any symptoms, utilizing the Test-to-Treat offering if infected and avoiding crowded indoor activities with poor ventilation for those at higher risk for severe illness.

The county supports the CDC recommendations and urges residents to wear high-quality masks—such as the N95 or KN95 masks—indoors to keep themselves, loved ones and communities safe during this season of increased travel and gatherings.

During this time, San Mateo County Health Department also asks that businesses, venue operators, event hosts, faith organizations and any other groups consider a mask requirement for anyone participating in indoor activities, and to ensure that indoor ventilation is increased by opening any windows and doors that are available.
