Oscar A Chicas

October 8, 1948 - April 28, 2023

Oscar Chicas, beloved son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away surrounded by his family while peacefully sleeping at home. He was 74. A retired employee of the Redwood City School District for more than 35 years, Oscar spent his last years courageously battling diabetes and kidney failure.

Born in El Salvador in 1948, he discovered his love of soccer at an early age and was an accomplished goalkeeper. After becoming an internationally certified FIFA referee, he went on to officiate matches throughout Central America. Some of his fondest memories were on the pitch, either playing or refereeing matches.

On March 31, 1973, he married the love of his life, Angela, and the two spent 50 wonderful years together. Seeking a brighter future for their family, they immigrated to the United States in 1980, where he wasted no time in building a life for his wife and their three sons. A hardworking and resourceful man, Oscar always went out of his way to help others. One of his greatest passions was soccer, and he enjoyed mentoring children who shared his love for the sport. After retiring, he found joy in coaching soccer for Clifford Elementary School and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Activities League.

An easy-going guy, Oscar loved spending time with his family, especially when it involved sharing a good meal at one of his favorite local restaurants. He was a well-loved member of the community and enjoyed running into familiar faces to reminisce about his many years of service with the local schools and coaching sports. In fact, Oscar was always proud to share that he knew just about everybody in Redwood City. If there was one thing that everyone could count on, it was hearing him share or invent a dad joke or two – he had a seemingly endless supply of them! Even while he was in the hospital before he passed away, Oscar was still sharing jokes with the staff and making everyone laugh.

Oscar is survived by a community of many wonderful co-workers, students, friends, family, his wife Angela, and his three proud sons who will continue keeping his legacy alive thanks to the many opportunities they provided for them.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, Oscar's family kindly requests that donations in his memory be made to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Association - Sheriff’s Activities League. This non-profit organization provides invaluable programs to local youth, including youth sports that Oscar was passionate about. Your donation would honor his legacy and continue his commitment to helping the community's youth.

Como empleado jubilado del Distrito Escolar de Redwood City por más de 35 años, Oscar pasó sus últimos años luchando valientemente contra la diabetes y la insuficiencia renal.

Un hombre sencillo, Oscar amaba pasar tiempo con su familia, especialmente compartir una buena comida en uno de sus restaurantes favoritos. Era un miembro muy querido de la comunidad y disfrutaba encontrarse con caras conocidas para rememorar sus muchos años de servicio en las escuelas locales y como entrenador. De hecho, Oscar siempre estaba orgulloso de poder decir que conocía a casi todo el mundo en Redwood City. Si había algo en lo que todos podían esperar, era escucharlo compartir o inventar uno o dos chistes de papá, ¡tenía un suministro interminable de ellos! Incluso cuando estaba hospitalizado antes de fallecer, Oscar continuaba compartiendo chistes con el personal y haciendo reír a todos.

Oscar es sobrevivido por una comunidad de muchos compañeros de trabajo, estudiantes, amigos, familiares, su esposa Angela y sus tres hijos quienes continuarán manteniendo vivo su legado gracias a las muchas oportunidades que sus padres les proporcionaron.

En lugar de flores o regalos, la familia de Oscar solicita amablemente que se hagan donaciones en su memoria a la Asociación del Sheriff del Condado de San Mateo - Liga de Actividades del Sheriff.
