The Redwood City Police Department has shut down Main Street between Maple and Chestnut due to a gas main break.

Construction workers were doing excavation on the site when they hit a gas line with a piece of equipment and causing the break and a small fire, according to Deputy Chief Greg DaCunha of the Redwood City Fire Department.

The fire has since been contained, and damage was limited to the workers' construction equipment. No one was injured.

The incident took place on the dog park side of Beech and Main streets, at the site of the 8.3-acre Elco Yards, or South Main Mixed-Use project. The development, which was acquired last fall by IQHQ, a life science real estate development company, includes new residential, office and retail space for the six blocks roughly bordered by El Camino Real and Maple, Cedar and Main streets.

All personnel have since left the scene.
