Good morning, Redwood City!

Gun control

As many of you know, tonight the city council will consider an urgency ordinance that would (at least temporarily) prevent any gun/ammunition shops from opening in Redwood City. This proposal comes after two separate firearms retailers inquired about opening businesses—including one, called Dumpling Defense, that submitted an official application. Already residents have spoken out, with hundreds signing a petition to support the moratorium.

According to City Manager Melissa Stevenson Diaz, adding the ordinance to the agenda was not because of public pressure. However. she did say the city was trying to avoid a repeat of what happened in San Carlos in 2017 when the council made a last-minute decision to ban the opening of a business that already had a license and lease.

In an Instagram poll, we asked readers whether the city should impose new regulations on firearm retail. 67% said yes, 22% said no and 11% were unsure. In a separate website poll, 53% said yes, 41% said no and 6% were unsure. Clearly this is a divisive issue, and we’d love to hear your thoughts. What do you think?

Should be an interesting discussion tonight… The meeting kicks off at 6 p.m. You can find the agenda and video for remote viewing here
