Police were called to Sequoia High School on Thursday afternoon after they said a 24-year-old man allegedly entered a classroom, grabbed a male student and attempted to pull him out of the room, Redwood City Police Department said in a news release.
According to police, a teacher physically intervened, which caused the man to flee. Police were then notified and arrived, and the high school was put on lockdown while officers attempted to locate the man. According to the Redwood City Police, the incident occurred around 2 p.m.
Officers began searching the campus, located at at 1201 Brewster Ave., and found the suspect exiting a school building on the west side. According to police, the man was holding a long cylindrical object, later identified as an umbrella.
According to Redwood City Police Capt. Ashley Osborne, the 24-year-old man allegedly resisted when officers attempted to detain him, and officers used force to take him into custody, which caused minor injuries.
Police said that further investigation revealed the suspect had punched a hole in a bathroom wall and stolen a printer cartridge while fleeing through the school before being arrested.
The man could be seen inside an ambulance outside the school while multiple police officers stood to the side.
The 24-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital and was later cleared and booked into Maguire Correctional Facility on charges of attempted kidnapping, burglary, child endangerment, obstructing officers, vandalism, and trespassing on school grounds.
This is the second time the man has been arrested in two days. On Wednesday, he was released on his own recognizance on a misdemeanor charge of trespass and refusing to leave private property, which he pled not guilty to.
On Thursday, roughly half a dozen Redwood City Police Department vehicles were on the scene at Sequoia High School at 2:50 p.m. District officials sent a note to summer school families on Thursday that “regular activities were disrupted this afternoon when an adult was reported on campus refusing to comply with our staff and security team.”
The campus is also home to the district office.Â
Redwood City Police stated in a news bulletin that all students and staff are safe.
The district noted in its communication to families that “in an abundance of caution, students and staff were directed to stay in classrooms during [the incident].”
“We are grateful for our students’ cooperation, the swift action of our security team and summer school staff, and the strong partnership with RCPD. We will follow-up if there is any new information to share, otherwise plan on normal operations resuming tomorrow.”
Summer school runs from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Sequoia campus.
