Palo Alto Festival of the Arts
Enjoy the work of 250 fine artists and craftspersons at this annual festival, and catch a variety of live music taking place on two stages and on street corners. In addition to the art that you can purchase and take home, with the festival’s 17th annual Italian Street Painting Expo, there’s an entire area devoted to beautiful temporary artworks created by talented chalk artists using the street as their canvas. Kids can try their hands at street painting, too, in the special Chalk-a-Lot area. Plus, musically inclined visitors can take their turn at the keyboard with the festival’s Chopin and Chandeliers area, featuring a piano all are invited to play, surrounded by chandeliers crafted from upcycled bottles. Also on tap for the event is gourmet food, fine wines and micro-brews.

The band performs a variety of covers, including songs by Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Maroon 5 and Bruno Mars. This concert celebrates the band’s homecoming and raises funds for the nonprofit Riekes Center, which aims to provide each student with “the best possible opportunity to define and accomplish individual goals, build character and learn transferable life skills through Creative Arts, Athletic Fitness and Nature Awareness, in an environment of non-judgment and mutual respect,” according to the center’s website.

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi
The 2024 presidential election campaign has seen some major twists recently. U.S. Rep. and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi can speak to this historic election and she certainly knows something about many other groundbreaking moments as well. Kepler’s Books presents Pelosi discussing her new book, “The Art of Power,” which chronicles her long career, the decisions she’s wrestled with and how she’s wrangled and negotiated with presidents from Bush to Biden. The book “describes for the first time what it takes to make history—not only as the first woman to ascend to the most powerful legislative role in our nation, but to pass laws that would save lives and livelihoods,” according to an event description. Pelosi is featured in conversation with Laurene Powell Jobs.
Aug. 26, 7 p.m., presented by Kepler’s Books at the California Theatre, 345 S. First St., San Jose. Tickets start at $58.74 and include a copy of “The Art of Power.” eventbrite.com.
