It was the spring of 1968, a year which is etched in history. Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King were assassinated, Richard Nixon was elected president, the demonstrations against the Vietnam War were dividing the country, and the Democratic Convention in Chicago witnessed a terrible street riot. 1968 was also when the Boing 747 took its maiden flight.
Locally, two men, Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore, got together at Noyce’s house and engaged in a serious conversation that Moore initiated. The conversation would change the future of high tech.
The semiconductor industry was growing. Moore, a chemist and engineer, was convinced that developing the capability of semiconductor memory would appear to have a bright future. Thus, Moore suggested they form a company to develop this emerging technology.
On July 18, 1968, Intel was born.

They brought in Andy Grove, and the three of them became the leaders of the company that would change the face of the future, which remains with us today.
Let’s look back a little at Gordon Moore….
Born in 1929, he was the second son of a San Mateo County Sheriff. After Moore’s father was promoted to deputy sheriff, the family moved to Redwood City.
At age 11, his parents gave Moore a chemistry set. This sparked a serious interest in the young lad, who decided to pursue the world of chemistry. Little did he know what a profound effect it would have on him and the rest of us!
To be continued…
Everything else is just history
