Good morning, Redwood City.
It's been one week since brush fires sparked on the island of Maui, causing the nation's deadliest wildfire in more than a century. Here on the mainland, residents with deep ties to the Valley Isle are still reeling at the news. Some people got married there. Others considered it their favorite vacation destination. Still others have friends on Maui who thankfully are alive but whose property was consumed by the fires.
Ralph Vitales of Redwood City is stepping up to aid his friends Kimo and Steffani Kirkman. The Kirkmans lost their house, two dogs and cat to the disaster. He's collected nearly $50,000 so far in a GoFundMe fundraiser.
You can read all about the Peninsula's efforts to send aid and aloha to the wildfire victims, as well as one local family's harrowing escape, in freelance reporter Neil Gonzales' article below.
Also in today's Express, check out the details of Wednesday's coastside shindig hosted by Fixin’ San Mateo County, the grassroots group advocating for the establishment of independent civilian oversight of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. The public is most definitely invited.
And here's a special shoutout to Beverly Morgan for her stunning image of sunset at the Sequoia Yacht Club. If you've snapped a brilliant Redwood City photo, share it with Pulse readers by sending it to editor@rwcpulse.com.
Have a good one!
