The Redwood City Public Library Foundation is inviting community members to support its Summer Learning Challenge, running from June 1 to August 31.

Each May, the SLC provides free books to students in Redwood City and Redwood Shores, encouraging them to read a set number of books over the summer. Those who complete the challenge earn an additional free book.

During the summer, the library also hosts events featuring authors and speakers to inspire children’s love of reading.

Barbara Neumann, a Redwood City Library Foundation board member, said that the SLC distributes approximately 9,000 books yearly, totaling roughly $35,000. The Foundation is seeking community support to continue this program in 2025, particularly for students who face learning challenges, speak a language other than English at home, or come from lower-income families.

The release added that a donation of $50 provides books for 10 students, while a $250 contribution sponsors an entire classroom.

Donations can be made by visiting the SLC website.
