A Redwood City resident has been terminated by the Belmont Police Department following his arrest on suspicion of sexual assault, authorities said.

Lt. Jeffrey Clements of the Redwood City Police Department said Filipe Gomes, 35, was arrested April 22 at the Belmont Police Department and booked into the San Mateo County Jail. The alleged incident occurred while Gomes was off duty and is not related to his work as a police officer, Clements said.

Lt. Pete Lotti of the Belmont Police Department said Gomes was placed on administrative leave immediately after his arrest and has since been terminated.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe confirmed the crime allegedly occurred in Redwood City. Gomes was released after posting a $100,000 bail bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 21 for arraignment, Wagstaffe said.

The DA added that after Gomes posted bail, he was released from custody and the arraignment was set about a month later to allow further investigation.

Gomes had a domestic violence restraining order filed against him last week. A temporary restraining order was granted, and a hearing on the matter is scheduled for May 16. Gomes is also scheduled to appear at a hearing regarding the relinquishment of any firearms in his possession on May 19.

Clements said Redwood City police do not believe there is any danger to the general public.

Wagstaffe noted that Redwood City police have not yet formally submitted the case to the district attorney’s office. Both Redwood City and Belmont police declined to provide additional details about the case.
