If you’re still checking your email after the official start of the long Fourth of July weekend, I thank you for your readership (even if I’m silently questioning your decision). But while you’re here, why don’t you pull up a chair and take a deep dive into the world of Peninsula barbecue? Adrienne Mitchel spoke to six pitmasters and a Stanford grad who’s a barbecue expert to get a sense of the local scene and what trends are most prevalent in Silicon Valley, including vegan and vegetarian versions of the cuisine.
And if you happen to be in Half Moon Bay for the parade and festivities tomorrow (or otherwise passing through over the next several weeks), stop by M Stark Gallery on Main Street to check out a Redwood City artist’s first solo exhibit. Whitney Alyssa Parker describes her work as “sewn abstract art,” and it has roots in her background in fashion design.
A wedding gown designer who worked in New York City, Whitney lost her job in the bridal industry during the pandemic. She and her husband had just relocated to Redwood City, and with more time on her hands Whitney decided to create her own artwork. Her exhibit, a tribute to California’s scenery titled “California Dreamscape,” opens tomorrow and runs through Aug. 17. Karla Kane spoke to Whitney and learned how her artwork comes to life for a story in today’s newsletter.
Logging off for the long weekend,

I talked with six pitmasters as well as a barbecue expert to understand what trends are markers of the local barbecue scene and where the future of the cuisine is heading.
