There are so many great places on the Peninsula to enjoy art. Here’s a sampling of new shows and events coming up in February at Peninsula galleries, cafes and more.

Viewpoints Gallery
Think you know the Bay Area well? You’ll get a new look at it through the eyes of painter Kaaren Marquez. Her show “Unique Perspectives” features colorful landscapes that draw inspiration from Cubism, according to a show announcement. In addition to local environs, Marquez has captured scenes of Italy and Norway. Meet Marquez Feb. 17, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Qualia Contemporary Art
February will be busy at the downtown Palo Alto gallery’s new space. Just a few days after closing up “Lasting Impressions,” on Feb. 13, Qualia will open two solo shows. Starting Feb. 17, visitors can catch “The Form of the Formless” by Chinese contemporary painter Xu Hongming. His works layer mineral powder on canvas, according to the gallery website, creating fields of color. Also opening Feb. 17 is “Homescapes” by Tommy Fitzpatrick, an exhibition of paintings exploring modernist architecture. Fitzpatrick draws on unusual tools to create his works, including items such as trowels and spatulas. An opening reception for both shows takes place Feb. 17, 4:30-6:30 p.m. The shows run through March 26.

Portola Art Gallery
Get closer to nature with the paintings of Redwood City-based artist Scott Johnson, whose solo show “Connection to Nature” runs through February at Portola Art Gallery. Johnson paints exclusively in oils, according to a press release about the show, and many of his landscapes capture the natural beauty of the Golden State and the Bay Area. Meet Johnson at the gallery on Feb. 24, 1-4 p.m.

Opened this month

The Main Gallery
Nanette Wylde’s latest show, “Encyclopedic: Weathered Volumes,” was literally years in the making. In the late ’90s, she transformed a set of old encyclopedias with white paint. Then Mother Nature lent an unpredictable hand in their second transformation: Wylde left the books outdoors for several decades. She brought them indoors last year and documented them, according to a press release. The resulting prints are on display at The Main Gallery.

Gallery House
The co-op gallery with a 65-year history in Palo Alto has lost its lease and is moving. The gallery’s current show, “So Ready,” is the last in its space, and features works in a variety of media by 30 member artists.

Gallery 9
For Valentine’s month, Los Altos’ Gallery 9 is showcasing the works of member artist Mami Weber with “Watercolor in Love.” As noted on her website, Weber’s works include florals, abstracts, landscapes and pieces that celebrate her Japanese roots.

Pacific Art League
The February show at the Pacific Art League offers a real inside look at this local institution.The show highlights the work of nearly two dozen of the Pacific Art League’s instructors, who lead classes in a variety of media that include charcoal drawing, oil painting, watercolors, mandala-making, collage and one of the league’s newest offerings, encaustic (wax) printing.

Bryant Street Gallery
This month, the gallery is featuring “Winterlude,” a group show of paintings by Ryan Cobourn, Shilo Ratner, Kerstin Heymann, Susan English, Carla Roth. The works range from abstracts to still-lifes.

Cafe Borrone
Sculptor and painter Eliza Wilson Thomas this week opened a show of large watercolors at Cafe Borrone. The pieces focus on social justice, including climate change and the effects of war.

Djerassi Sculpture Hikes
Starting Feb. 11
, you can sign up for the spring season of guided art hikes offered by Djerassi Resident Artists Program that will start next month. The program’s hike director and volunteers guide groups of up to 20 on a 3.5 mile trek through the 583-acre ranch, stopping by over 40 sculptures. The hikes take place on Sundays.
