San Bruno is widely known for the actual location of San Francisco International Airport. It’s not unusual for many major airports to be physically located in a city other than their namesake.

However, have you ever heard of San Bruno being called a “city with a heart?”

Cupid Row. City of San Bruno

There’s an excellent reason why this moniker has been associated with the airport city. There is a unique neighborhood in San Bruno which is literally shaped like a heart. Yes, indeed, cross my heart!

No one is quite sure how or why the concept of a heart-shaped neighborhood was developed. What we do know is its origin dates back to the very early 20th century. Some suggest it was nicknamed “Heart Area.”

Initial construction of homes started in 1909 and continued until just after World War ll. Since this was not a municipally planned section of San Bruno, the houses were designed and built by contractors and owners.

So, let’s now talk particulars …

The neighborhood covers approximately a half-mile in diameter, with roughly 200 residents. It was designed for working-class folks; thus, the homes, for the most part, are approximately 1,000 square feet in size.

From above, the street that points directly to the actual heart is called “Cupid Row.” Thus, what you see from above resembles a heart-shaped arrow.

So where is this ‘lovely spot, you ask?

Approximately one mile south of Highway 380 on El Camino is Victory Honda. Take Taylor Avenue east until you reach a five-point intersection. Carlton Avenue and Terrace Avenue form the perimeter of the actual heart. Take either of those streets around the curve, and you’ll intersect with Cupid Row, which forms the arrow shaft.

Here’s hoping you have a heartfelt visit!
