Redwood City officials on Monday approved the purchase of new security bollards for the Broadway pedestrian mall, formalizing infrastructure for a block that is already closed to vehicle traffic.
The unanimous vote, taken at the Monday, Feb. 9 meeting as part of the consent agenda, authorizes the city manager to enter into a sole-source contract of up to $439,300 for 10 bollards — four retractable and six fixed — that will permanently restrict vehicle access between Jefferson Avenue and Main Street, while allowing entry for emergency, maintenance and Recology vehicles.
The total project cost, including installation and site preparation, is estimated at $520,000 and will be funded through the city’s Parking Fund, with no anticipated impact on the general fund.
In 2024, the city permanently closed the 2000 block of Broadway and a portion of Redwood Creek to vehicle traffic, allowing the area to continue operating as a pedestrian thoroughfare downtown.
