David Li, a policy fellow at the Alameda County Office of Education, was appointed as the new Area III Trustee by the Redwood City School District Board of Trustees on Oct. 9.
“Now that I’ve made Redwood City my long-term home, I’m committed to serving RCSD in whatever capacity I can,” said Li in a statement.
The RCSD Board initiated the appointment process to ensure representation for Area III after no candidates filed for the seat by the election deadline.
The board initially received 15 applications, but three were disqualified for not meeting residency requirements, and two applicants withdrew from the process.
The remaining eight candidates presented to the Board. According to RCSD, Li’s presentation showcased his deep commitment to public education and led to his selection. During the presentation, he emphasized the importance of providing all children access to safe, high-quality learning environments that foster both career readiness and civic engagement.
Li previously served on the board of a public charter school in Brooklyn from 2017 to 2020 and has experience advising governing boards as a lawyer and consultant. He will take the oath of office and assume his duties as a board member on Dec. 17. His term lasts four years and the Area III seat will be up for election in 2028.
Trustee Area III includes Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion School, Henry Ford School and Kennedy Middle School, as well as portions of the attendance zones for Garfield, Henry Ford, Hoover, and Roosevelt schools.
To challenge the appointment, a petition calling for a special election, containing the valid signatures of at least 1.5 percent (1.5%) of registered voters in the district at the time of the last election or 25 registered voters of the district, whichever is greater, must be filed in the office of the county superintendent within 30 days of the appointment on October 9, 2024. If no petition is filed or it lacks sufficient valid signatures, the appointment of David Li will become final.
