The State of California has awarded nearly $16 million to the County of San Mateo to provide permanent housing and support services as part of Project Homekey, the county has announced.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced the funding on Feb. 11, which is slated to go toward the purchase, rehabilitation, and operation of the Comfort Inn & Suites, a 51-room complex at 1818 El Camino Real in Redwood City.
The Redwood City Council is expected to consider contributing more than $1.3 million in unspent federal funds toward the costs of adding kitchenettes to each room, the county said.
In addition to an affordable apartment, residents will receive on-site services such as education, employment, mental health rehabilitation and medical assistance through partners Alta Housing and the Mental Health Association of San Mateo County.
Project Homekey is a state-wide "Housing First" initiative that posits that giving chronically homeless individuals a stable place to live leads to more successful life changes, such as treatment or other medical care.
County Manager Mike Callagy said in a statement that these funds will "create real and lasting change in the lives of those they help and bring us one step closer to reaching functional zero homelessness."
San Mateo County has previously received two Project Homekey cash infusions, one in November of 2020 for $33 million and another in December of 2021 for $68 million, according to the county. $55 million in state grants will be used to construct and operate a Navigation Center with 240 units east of Highway 101 in Redwood City, the county said.
