A tripod toy poodle who was found "cowering underneath a car" in Redwood City had to have her leg amputated and is now recovering comfortably at the Tom and Annette Lantos Center for Compassion in Burlingame.
Lia — a name chosen by the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA (PHS/SPCA) staff– is now available for adoption. But her journey has not been an easy one.
When Lia was found in Redwood City in early May, she did not have a collar or tags, nor was she microchipped, according to a news release by PHS/SPCA.
Unable to move on her own, Lia underwent a medical evaluation by PHS/SPCA veterinary staff, and it was discovered that she had sustained a major injury to her right rear leg that would alter Lia's life forever.
"The damage was sadly too severe for surgical repair of the leg, and after careful consideration, our veterinary team made the decision to amputate her leg. Our staff estimate she's about two years old," said PHS/SPCA communications manager Buffy Martin Tarbox.
Despite the adversity of missing a limb, Tarbox says that Lia has done wonderfully in adapting to her new situation.
"She's done quite well in learning how to adjust to being a tripod and is very sweet and affectionate. She'll make a loving addition to someone's home," Tarbox said.
The PHS/SPCA encourages potential adopters who are interested in meeting with Lia call the shelter at 650-340-7022 to schedule an appointment to meet her. Lia is spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated, and she can be adopted for a $160 adoption fee.
