Sen. Josh Becker, D-Menlo Park, on Monday presented a $4.45 million check to the Redwood City council, state funds the senator secured to convert a downtown library parking lot to a park.
The new park and community area will be built next to the Redwood City Public Library at 1012 Main St. The park is one of three parks that the council approved in 2018 and will be the first that will be converted.
"Not many of us have large backyards and large space, so I know for me with our kids, it's really critical to take them to parks, to playgrounds in the community. It's so important," Becker said during Monday night's meeting. "To think that we'll have a beautiful park here with some of the features that have been envisioned by the team right next to the library in such a central location is tremendous."
Hale said she hoped the parking lots project would be an example for other municipalities to convert parking lots to parks.
Construction will begin in 2023, and once completed, the freshly-built park will have a plaza, a play area for children, various public art, a water feature, and a lawn and garden area for the community to enjoy.
In addition to the new park and community space, the funding that Becker acquired will also be used to help build out the Redwood Creek Trail, a popular trail located in Redwood National Park. The funds will help to provide boardwalks and pathways to connect Downtown Redwood City with San Francisco Bay, according to a press release Becker.
