The Redwood City Downtown Library will begin the process of upgrading its electronic return system this week.

The library's electronic return system will be offline for about three months beginning Thursday, but members can still return materials using the book drop outside or at the customer service desk. Library Director Derek Wolfgram explained that automated book return technology requires routine upgrades.

"The system is wearing out and it's getting harder to get parts for it," said Wolfgram. "So we're just replacing it with the latest version of of the automated sorting technology."

The Redwood City Library offers online resources that people can use with their library card from home. The library's large collection of e-books, which account for around 20% of the library's circulation, can be found on its website. The Redwood City Library also offers a 24/7 online homework tutoring service for K-12 students with live tutors in English and Spanish.

To help with the transition, the Redwood City Library is offering an extended check out period for items from the Downtown branch. Members have 12 weeks to return borrowed materials. The Schaberg and Redwood Shores library branches will continue to offer automated book returns.
