A three-alarm blaze broke out at a single-story commercial building in North Fair Oaks on Saturday, Dec. 20, prompting roughly 60 firefighters to deploy to the scene.
The fire at 707 and 711 Warrington Avenue was reported to emergency dispatchers at 5:40 p.m. and the first crews arrived five minutes later, Redwood City Deputy Fire Chief Greg DaCunha told this publication.
He described the affected building as a “total loss,” but said that firefighters were successful at stopping the blaze from spreading to surrounding structures. The building that caught fire was unoccupied at the time and no one was injured, DaCunha said.
“When units arrived, it was already through the roof, so it pretty much was a defensive fire for that building,” DaCunha said.
As firefighters worked to contain the blaze, police closed off the surrounding streets. Neighbors looked on from behind the barricades as the smell of smoke was evident in the air.
The fire was mostly knocked down by 7 p.m. and was fully extinguished by 7:30 p.m., with firefighters just looking for remaining hotspots, DaCunha said.
The cause of the fire and total cost of the damage has not yet been determined, he added.
