Thousands of AT&T wireless customers who were affected by a widespread outage and unable to call 911 Thursday morning have had their service restored, according to the company.
AT&T announced just after noon that service was restored, but was slim on explanations for the problem that reached its peak in the morning.
In California, multiple communities, including Redwood City, Palo Alto and Petaluma, reported trouble with calling 911 on their AT&T mobile networks and were advised to use Wi-Fi calling or try alternate numbers for first responders in case of emergency.
Earlier Thursday, AT&T acknowledged the problem. “Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning,” said the company at att.com. “Our network teams took immediate action and so far three-quarters of our network has been restored.”
The website Downdetector, which tracks tech-related outages, showed over 74,000 people reporting problems with their AT&T mobile network in the last 24 hours.
Downdetector uses self-reported information so is merely a snapshot of an outage problem.
