The Healthy Community Mural Project will be located along both sides of the 5th Avenue underpass, a well-traveled pedestrian and bicycle path used by residents and visitors.

The County of San Mateo’s Office of Arts and Culture is asking for the community’s input on what images should decorate a popular path in North Fair Oaks.

The "Healthy Community Mural Project" is a collaboration of the Office of Arts and Culture, County of San Mateo, the Art Commission, County of San Mateo and the Culture Collective of NFO/Colectivo Cultural de NFO.

In July, the board of supervisors allocated $60,000 for the project to “bring pride and beauty to the North Fair Oaks community.” The funds come from the voter-approved Measure K half-cent sales tax.

The mural will be located along both sides of the 5th Avenue underpass, a well-traveled pedestrian and bicycle path used by residents and visitors.

The first step of the project is a community survey that will help identify 16 healthy community topics for the project’s 16 mural panels.

The online survey is available here and is open until Sept. 30:

English - Spanish.

You may also find printed copies of the survey at these locations:

  • Casa Circulo Cultural:  3090 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063
  • North Fair Oaks Library:  2510 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063
  • Fair Oaks Community Center:  2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA 94063

After the survey is complete, two virtual community meetings will be held to further engage the community:

  • Nov. 17, 2022: Discussion of survey results and mural topics
  • Jan. 26, 2023: Artist presentations based on community input

Artists and artist teams interested in applying for the opportunity to create the mural are encouraged to learn about the project and the selection process. Details are posted on the Culture Collective of NFO website.
