More than 250 HIP Housing supporters came together at the Fox Theatre on Thursday, May 12 for the nonprofit's 50th anniversary, "Cheers to 50 Years," which featured special guest speaker LeVar Burton of “Reading Rainbow” fame.

Burton joined HIP Housing Executive Director Kate Comfort Harr for a fireside chat to discuss a range of topics, from the importance of representation in storytelling to the power of making purposeful decisions.

Maria Divina, a HIP Housing Self Sufficiency Program client and recent college graduate, spoke at the event as well.

“I would like to thank HIP Housing for all of your help and support and making the impossible possible, and for your continuous support to parents who are trying to earn their degrees so they can provide a better future for their children and themselves,” Divina said.

The event began with Master of Ceremonies Diane Dwyer, followed by comments from HIP Housing President of the Board of Directors Shelley Pavela.  Assembly member Kevin Mullin honored HIP Housing’s 50-year milestone with a proclamation and a video celebrating former agency associate director, Jolly Perkocha, and long-time agency supporter and Honorary Board Member, Congresswoman Jackie Speier was played for the audience.
