Plant-based power: Your guide to Peninsula vegetarian and vegan dining

Dining out isn’t always the easiest when accommodating a vegetarian or vegan diet, and I should know: My boyfriend and two of my best friends are vegetarian and/or vegan. It’s time-consuming scouring menus trying to see what options are available, and often times meals are carb-heavy with little to no plant-based protein options.

Assistant lifestyle editor and vegetarian Karla Kane has curated a guide to 10 vegetarian and vegan restaurants along the Peninsula, including restaurants specializing in Indian, Mediterranean, Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese cuisines.

While not on her list, another vegetarian restaurant I’d like to give a special shoutout to is Tal Palo in downtown Los Altos. If you’re looking for a special vegetarian dining experience, I’d definitely recommend this restaurant. There’s no menu; chef Adriana Domínguez-Porter curates a multicourse feast and accommodates dietary restrictions. If you’re dining with a meat lover, you can request meat, but by default, all meals are vegetarian. Lunch typically ranges from $38-$49 per person, brunch around $49 and dinner from $65-$70 (tip is included in the price.)

Stay tasty,
Adrienne

Ribs tray at Breakwater Barbecue

Ribs tray with mac and cheese, potato salad, housemade pickles, sliced onion and thick-sliced bread at Breakwater Barbecue in El Granada ($26). Photo by Adrienne Mitchel.

With Starbucks launching its PSL later this month (which is my marker for when fall begins), I decided to enjoy the final weeks of summer by indulging in some outdoor barbecue. And if you’re heading out to the Coastside, the best spot for barbecue is Breakwater. (In fact, Breakwater is the only barbecue joint along the Peninsula with a Michelin distinction.)

For me, ribs are nostalgic. I remember eating lunch at the now-closed Armadillo Willy’s in Los Altos as a kindergartener and always ordering two ribs and French fries. So of course I opted for Breakwater’s ribs tray, which includes ½ pound of smoked meat (two ribs), two small sides (I did mac and cheese and potato salad), housemade pickles, sliced onion and thick-sliced bread ($26).

The ribs are insanely juicy and tender and practically fall off the bone. The spice rub is delectable, with a heavy hand of coarsely ground black pepper for an added zing. The potato salad is standard, but the mac and cheese is perfect, with a ridiculously creamy and cheesy sauce. The housemade pickles and sliced onion cut through the richness and fattiness of the ribs and mac and cheese, allowing you to continue digging back in for more.

Breakwater Barbecue, 10151 Cabrillo Highway, El Granada; 650-713-5303, Instagram: @breakwaterbarbecue. Open Sunday to Thursday from noon to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m.
