This weekend marks the convergence of two major milestones.

Saturday is the 40th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, an event that first drew close to 2,500 volunteers and this year is expected to bring at least 50,000 people together throughout the state. San Mateo and Santa Clara counties are gearing up for cleanups of local beaches, creeks and shoreline areas, with several sites already at capacity for volunteers.

Coastal Cleanup Day has helped habitats, inspired environmental stewardship and fostered community among volunteers, but it’s also shaped policy. Data collected by volunteers each year details the amounts and types of trash they clean up, and those numbers are used in the course of policymaking to combat pollution. Check out my feature to read about the evolution of Coastal Cleanup Day.

And Stanford’s Anderson Collection is celebrating its 10th anniversary with two new exhibitions and a free community day Sunday featuring music, art activities and art talks by Stanford grad students. Since opening in 2014, the museum has had 37 exhibitions and hundreds of thousands of visitors, according to Anderson Collection Director Jason Linetzky. Sheryl Nonnenberg takes a look back at how the museum came together and details its exhibits marking the milestone.
