Table for 6 offers seasonal tea parties and brunches out of the owner’s home

When I think of dining out, I typically imagine going to a sit-down restaurant in a downtown area or a fast-casual joint in a strip mall. But there’s a new eatery offering a completely different ambiance – it’s in the owner’s home.
Table for 6 is a new reservation-only eatery offering tea parties and brunches featuring tantalizing desserts like lemon tiramisu with limoncello, fusion savories like English Japanese egg salad sandwiches with mustard and jammy egg, and larger plates like tall stacks of cinnamon French toast served with brown sugar bacon.
Don’t have a group of six? Don’t worry – you can dine alone or even reserve a table for up to 10. Freelance writer Edwina Dueñas talked with owner Christina Wu to get the story on San Mateo’s new microkitchen.
Meanwhile, I talked with two duos who recently opened new concepts along the Peninsula: Suzie Zhu and Kay Y., childhood friends who opened a Menlo Park bakery and cafe specializing in roll cakes, burnt Basque cheesecakes and tea drinks; and mother and son Michiyo and Sohei Lappen, who opened a French bistro in San Bruno offering a prix fixe dinner.
Stay tasty,
Adrienne
How a San Mateo woman turned her home into a brunch and tea party microkitchen
A new Peninsula reservation-only brunch and tea party spot isn’t located downtown or in a strip mall – it’s inside owner Christina Wu’s home in the San Mateo Highlands.

Roll cakes at Temp & Time
If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat that isn’t too decadent or heavy and features flavors a bit more unique than your typical vanilla or chocolate, I’d recommend trying a slice of roll cake from Temp & Time.
This new Menlo Park bakery and cafe is quaint and understated, with a calming wabi-sabi ambiance. In fact, it’s pretty easy to miss while driving along El Camino, as it’s located behind Drunken Monk Izakaya. With everything made in-house by its two founders, who also were childhood friends, it’s a small operation with a lot of love and passion behind it.
Like the ambiance, Temp & Time’s roll cakes are minimalistic in style – not coated in frosting, covered in fondant or adorned with sprinkles. Each flavor features light and fluffy cake stuffed with both a flavored cream and whipped cream, and none of them are too sweet.
I tried five flavors (Thai tea, Biscoff, hojicha, coffee and black sesame), and all flavors tasted exactly as advertised. While it’s hard to pick a favorite – each cake is identical in texture and decoration – I was particularly impressed with the Thai tea, which is a flavor not often seen in baked goods. Temp & Time steeps real Thai tea leaves to make the cake and cream burst with Thai tea flavor.
If you’re looking for a dessert with a lot of bells and whistles, Temp & Time won’t fit the bill. But if you want something simple that’s well-executed, I’d recommend checking it out.
