Two Twelvemonth bakers are hosting monthly backyard bake sales in Pacifica

Backyards aren’t just for barbecues. In February, writer Edwina Dueñas wrote about a San Mateo woman transforming her backyard into an afternoon tea and brunch spot. This month, Dueñas explored a different type of backyard business: a monthly bakery pop-up.
The Bakesale was launched in October by Veronica Cotter and Megan McDevitt, who work as bakers at Burlingame’s vegan bakery Twelvemonth Bakehouse, a sister eatery of plant-based restaurant Twelvemonth. In addition to sweet and savory pastries, this Pacifica pop-up also offers a variety of coffee and tea drinks. Their next bake sale is set for May 11.
Meanwhile, I talked with David Nayfeld of Che Fico and Gianni Chilorio of Doppio Zero, two acclaimed chefs who are reinventing their old culinary concepts. Nayfeld is transforming his former Italian grocery store into a fast-casual concept offering flavors of the Jewish diaspora, and Chilorio is transforming his former upscale Spanish restaurant into an old-school Italian American sit-down concept.
It looks like the weekend’s forecast has a heavy chance of wine, with three wine-focused events scheduled along the Peninsula. More on that in Edible Intel.
Stay tasty,
Adrienne

Strawberry matcha at Nabi Cat Cafe
Here’s what you need to know before going to Nabi Cat Cafe in Santa Clara (one of the very few cat cafes in the Bay Area!).
First, plan ahead. Prepaid reservations, which can be placed on their website, get filled up pretty far in advance, particularly on the weekends. When I made my reservation, I had to look about a month out to get a spot on the weekend.
Second, arrive early. I completely underestimated the amount of time it would take me to find parking and ended up nearly 15 minutes late to my reservation, leaving me with only 45 minutes with the cats instead of a full 60.
Third, if you’re not a cat person but love Korean-inspired beverages, you don’t have to pay $28 for an hour in the cat cafe (one complimentary drink is included in this ticket price.) The business is divided into two separate rooms: The front is a cafe where you can order drinks and pastries to go, and the back is a two-story area with free-roaming cats.
Compared to the cat cafe I’ve been to in Japan, I actually liked Nabi more. At the cat cafe in Japan I went to, the cats were extremely sleepy and slow, making me wonder whether they had been sedated, and the coffee and other beverages came out of a vending machine and weren’t that tasty. Some cats at Nabi were asleep, but many others were quite energetic and playful, and the strawberry matcha I ordered was excellent and tasted like something out of a bougie cafe.
Perhaps most exciting about Nabi Cat Cafe is that it has already helped three cats get adopted, with three more cats in the process of being adopted. Volunteers are also welcome.
