A 31-year-old woman was found dead in a detached garage amid a “heavily involved” fire in North Fair Oaks early Friday, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
Half a dozen fire engines from the Redwood City Fire Department and Menlo Park Fire Protection District, along with deputies with the sheriff’s office, arrived at a 2-bedroom single-family home in the 600 block of Hurlingame Avenue around 4:45 a.m. Jan. 30 to a fire they said threatened the main residence and nearby structures.
Fire crews were able to get the fire “under control” in about 15 minutes, according to a press release from the county. The victim was “quickly removed” from the burning structure and was pronounced dead by medical personnel on the scene, authorities said.
Two other occupants evacuated the home before first responders arrived and were not injured, officials said. Deputies helped clear nearby homes to ensure safety and preserve evidence.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and investigators with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s, County Coroner’s and District Attorney’s offices are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Authorities do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.
The affected portion of Hurlingame Avenue will remain closed to traffic for the rest of the day. Expect delays.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
