September 28, 1953 – April 16, 2023

Michael Frank Goines, 69, passed away on April 16, 2023 from natural causes while sleeping in his home in Redwood City, CA. Born in Redwood City to William Furman and Rose Madeline (Napoleon) Goines, he was a graduate of San Carlos High school and Cañada College with a degree in Music.

Michael was a dedicated husband, devoted father, avid musician, and accomplished drummer (with "scary fast hands" according to his peers). Known as Mike by many, he was a well-traveled musician who played the drums for decades in many groups both professionally and as a hobby. Michael's greatest accomplishment and pride was his family and home in Redwood City, where he lived his entire life. He was a devoted husband to his forever love of over 50 years, Valerie. Together they thrived as parents to their daughter Kate and son James, supporting them in every step as they pursued careers in education and law. He is survived by his beloved children and grandchildren: Kate, Derek and their sons Dominic and Carson, and James, Veronica and their son Carlo.

Michael loved coaching and attending his family's sporting activities. He taught many students, of all ages, the art of drumming in his home studio. He was passionate about all aspects of music including playing the drums, listening to or watching musicians, and sharing his impressive collection. Mike enjoyed reading and constantly had a rotation of books in hand, and appreciated discussions about a wide variety of topics. He had a skilled green thumb and took great pride in caring for his home, yards, and gardens – particularly enjoying warm, sunny weather. Traveling was another joy and he cherished memories on trips throughout California and abroad in Europe, especially Italy. He enjoyed caring for dogs, with his two most recent being Miles Davis and Luna; both rescued and living their best lives. Mike loved being outdoors and was a regular on the neighborhood walking circuit, always with a dog or two. While a man of few words, he was known for his spectacular sense of humor and one-liners; Mike loved to laugh and joke. The sounds of him and Valerie laughing together is fondly remembered.

In addition to his two children and three grandchildren, Michael is survived by his three brothers, Bill Goines of Los Altos, CA, Bruce Goines of Novato, CA, his twin brother Mark Goines also of Los Altos, CA and many nieces and nephews across multiple generations. There will be a Celebration of Life for Michael on May 20th at 2pm at the Highlands Community Club, in Redwood City. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Music in Schools Today at https://www.musicinschoolstoday.org/michaelgoinesfund (a page has been created for Michael Goines under the Donate tab).
