A suspect was arrested in Menlo Park on Sunday night, June 30, following two armed robberies in San Mateo County that took place within 10 minutes of each other.

On Sunday, June 20, around 7:10 p.m., the Menlo Park Police Department received a report of an armed robbery at the 7-Eleven located at 525 Oak Grove Ave. According to a press release from the Menlo Park Police Department, witnesses described the suspect as a man wearing all black clothing and brandishing a handgun.

Approximately 10 minutes later, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a second armed robbery at a Shell gas station at 743 Marsh Road in unincorporated San Mateo County. The description of the suspect and the suspect’s vehicle matched the descriptions of the suspect given at the Menlo Park robbery.

Sheriff’s deputies and Menlo Park Police officers responded to the area of the second robbery. A Menlo Park Police officer saw the suspect fleeing the scene, and attempted to stop the vehicle. According to press releases from the Sheriff’s Office and the Menlo Park Police Department, the suspect continued to flee from officers at high speed, before crashing his car at the intersection of Marsh Road and Scott Drive, near the on-ramp to Highway 101.

The suspect was then arrested and booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility.

The firearm used in the robberies was later determined to be a replica handgun. The items that were stolen from the two locations were recovered.

“We are grateful for the partnership of the community members who came together to provide video surveillance footage and to identify (the suspect) as the perpetrator of these two robberies,” said the Menlo Park Police Department in a press release. “Especially to the passing motorist who saw something concerning and called police to provide as much information as he could.”
