Redwood City police arrested a Georgia man on Wednesday in connection with an incident last month at a gym that escalated when a firearm was allegedly pointed at another patron.
Officers responded around 2:49 a.m. Dec. 15 to a report of a disturbance at a Planet Fitness located at 242 Walnut Street, according to the Redwood City Police Department. Police learned that two patrons had been involved in a dispute inside the business that continued outside after both left the 24 hour gym, which is located in a shopping center with Sports Basement near Interstate 101.
During the confrontation, the suspect, which police later identified as 38-year-old Georgia resident Louie Yu, allegedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the victim from close range. The victim retreated back into Planet Fitness, and Yu fled the scene. The incident was captured on nearby surveillance cameras, police said.
The case was forwarded to the department’s investigations division, where detectives identified Yu, who has a last known address in Sharpsburg, Georgia, which is a small town 40 minutes from Atlanta. Investigators obtained search warrants for Yu, his vehicle and a storage locker.
The Redwood City Police Department was granted a gun violence emergency protection order against Yu on Jan. 6 that required him to surrender all firearms and ammunition.
On Jan. 7 at about 9:05 p.m., detectives located Yu inside his vehicle in San Bruno and arrested him without incident. Police said Yu was found with a loaded firearm concealed on his person at the time of the arrest. Searches conducted under the warrants resulted in the seizure of five firearms, two imitation firearms, numerous high-capacity magazines and more than 1,500 rounds of ammunition.
Yu was later booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of felony assault with a firearm.
No charges have been filed.
Planet Fitness did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
