The Midpeninsula has no shortage of seriously unique homes. From a waterfront property with a private dock in Redwood City to a resort-style compound with 10 fireplaces, a 15-seat theater, business center, indoor pool with a swim-up bar in Los Altos Hills, these one-of-a-kind properties – whether because of their price, unusual design or history – are notable even for Silicon Valley. We’ve compiled a list of some of these not-so-ordinary properties that are on the market right now – or recently sold.

Atherton
On the market

Designed by architect Stanley Saitowitz, Emeritus Professor of Architecture at UC Berkeley who SF Curbed has called “one of the most respected, polarizing and prolific designers in San Francisco,” this ultra-modern home in West Atherton looks like a giant piece of art perched on the hillside. The home’s unique design consists of two L-shaped concrete, glass and steel boxes that overlap one another, creating a giant courtyard flanked by two “floating” cantilevered rooms, each spanning 23 feet and featuring 13-foot, floor-to-ceiling walls of glass with unobstructed views of the San Francisco skyline. Built in 2017, the 16,000-square-foot compound includes a three-level main residence with six bedrooms and 5 1/2 bathrooms, plus two separate buildings, each with a full kitchen. Other amenities include multiple car charging stations, a seven-hole putting green with a bunker, a movie theater, and pool and spa, according to the sales listing

Among ‘most-viewed’ listings in U.S.

2,001 square feet, 4 bedrooms, vaulted ceilings, enclosed screen porch
Los Altos
Sold

Built in 1926, this country-style cottage in central Los Altos became among the most-viewed online sales listings in the nation when it went on the market on Jan.15. The home ranked No. 6 on Redfin.com’s “10 Most Viewed Home Listings” in January, according to the real estate company.  The main attraction of this four-bedroom, four-bath home was likely the home’s move-in condition and major tech-hub location, according to Redfin’s analysis of its “Most Viewed” list.  Seven of the 10 homes on January’s list were in Silicon Valley, including a second Los Altos home (ranked #9) and a Palo Alto home (ranked #10).  “There’s still a scarcity of desirable homes that don’t require renovation. That results in more attention for the limited number of attractive listings,” according to the report.
