This weekend, Shamarr Allen and The SticklerPhonics bring jazz and funk to a free show in Palo Alto; Menlo Park's Bistro Vida hosts a Duran Duran dinner and after party to support cancer nonprofit and Camacu plays a family-friendly concert at Magical Bridge Playground.

B Earthwise welcomes Shamarr Allen, The SticklerPhonics

If you missed the chance to visit New Orleans this year, local presenter Earthwise may have the concert just for you. New Orleans native and bandleader Shamarr Allen and local jazz trio The SticklerPhonics will be playing a double bill at Mitchell Park Bowl on Sunday, Aug. 20. Trumpet player and singer Allen is known for his genre-bending style that brings together a host of Black musical traditions including funk, soul, jazz and hip-hop, and promises to bring a grooving selection of tunes to Palo Alto. The SticklerPhonics, an unusually composed trio featuring tenor saxophonist Raffi Garabedian, trombonist Danny Lubin-Laden and bandleader Scott Amendola on drums, is known for their unconventional jazz arrangements and stripped-down big band sound without any chordal instruments like guitar, piano or bass. This concert is set to bring together a set of unique voices in the world of jazz and funk.

I Aug. 20, 2-4 p.m. at Mitchell Park Bowl, 600 E. Meadow Drive, Palo Alto. Tickets are free. eventbrite.com. (AJ)

B Duran Duran Fundraiser Dinner and After Party
Tickets went fast for Duran Duran's Aug. 19 special benefit concert at The Guild Theatre, which will raise funds for The Cancer Awareness Trust, following the diagnosis of former band member, guitarist Andy Taylor, with stage 4 prostate cancer. Whether or not you nabbed a ticket to the concert, restaurateur Ali El Safy is offering a way to celebrate the band's music and support the cause behind their Peninsula show. El Safy's Bistro Vida in downtown Menlo Park has teamed with The Guild for an evening to raise additional funds for the Cancer Awareness Trust. Bistro Vida will host a three-course prix-fixe dinner from 5 to 10 p.m, while DJ Quam spins Duran Duran songs and other '80s favorites. At 10:30 p.m., the fun shifts to outdoors, where an after party features more music, dancing and a (mostly) casual menu of burgers, beer, wine and champagne. Half of the proceeds from the evening benefit The Cancer Awareness Trust.

I Aug. 19 at Bistro Vida, 641 Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park. Cocktails at 4 p.m., dinner served between 5 and 10 p.m. $100 per person for prix fixe dinner. After party starts at 10:30 p.m. with no admission charge. For dinner reservations or more info, visit bistro-vida.com. (HZ)
