Redwood City and the San Mateo County Toy and Book Drive are asking residents to help wrap donated presents on Monday, Dec. 11, at Red Morton Community Center located at 1120 Roosevelt Ave., Redwood City, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The event, which has been around for nearly 30 years, is part of a year-long effort to gather donated toys and books for residents who need assistance. Next week, Santa will deliver hundreds of toys and books to hundreds of families during a three-day event joined by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, the Redwood City Fire Department and the Redwood City Police Department along with their families, said Sgt. Javier Acosta, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.

“On delivery night, when we bring the toys to the children with Santa and Mrs. Claus, it makes it all worth it,” Acosta said. “The first time I volunteered was around 12 years ago, and after the first night of delivery, I realized it was the most rewarding thing I have ever done while working for the Sheriff’s Office.

National Football League alums and Super Bowl Champions John Paye and Allan Kennedy will be wrapping gifts and meeting with community members, the Super Bowl trophy, and a silent auction, according to a Redwood City Fire Department flyer.

While the toy drive has never been short on toys, the program is looking for toys for next year’s drive and is asking volunteers to drop toys off at the local fire or police department, Acosta said.
