Redwood City Assistant Manager Alex Khojikian has been as the new city manager for San Mateo, according to a news release from the city of San Mateo. He is slated to begin his new role on Aug. 21.

Khojikian will succeed San Mateo City Manager Drew Corbett, who is set to retire on June 30.

During his time as Assistant City Manager in Redwood City, Khojikan was involved with the development of San Mateo County’s new navigation center and championed several other housing, homelessness and anti‐displacement initiatives. Khojikian said in the announcement that he is excited to get started.

“San Mateo is a dynamic and inclusive city with diverse neighborhoods and business districts, and my goal is to support people of all backgrounds so everyone in the community can thrive,” Khojikian said in a statement.

San Mateo Mayor Amourence Lee said the city was “excited to have Alex [Khojikan] join our team.” Lee said Khojikian is a fitting replacement to lead San Mateo, a similarly sized city with many of the same community dynamics as Redwood City.

“He is a proven leader in San Mateo County and he’s prepared to hit the ground running on day one,” Lee said.

Prior to working in Redwood City, Khojikan served four years with the city of Half Moon Bay where he rose to deputy city manager and six years with the city of Paramount. He earned a master’s in public administration from California State University Long Beach and a bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in public policy from University of California, Berkeley.

In a statement, Redwood City Manager Melissa Stevenson-Diaz called Khojikan “an outstanding and accomplished local government leader” and said she was happy for Khojikan.

“I know the San Mateo City Council, staff and community will enjoy working with him,” she said.

Community Development Director Christina Horrisberger will serve as interim city manager for San Mateo until Alex begins on Aug. 21, 2023.
