It’s time to face the music in Redwood City — another painted community piano is coming to town.
Peppered with orange California poppies, the new baby grand will be unveiled on March 11 in the lobby of the county building at 500 County Center. Titled “Living the Life,” the piano was painted by Filipino Chinese artist Christine Ong-Dijcks and features a baby blue sky, fluffy clouds, rolling green hills and scenes of children at play.

Ong-Dijcks’ painting is described by the nonprofit as “a merge of the natural splendors of Redwood City with the innocent joy of children blowing bubbles,” and the artist aims to capture “the essence of life’s simple pleasures.” She sought to evoke the beauty of nature amid Redwood City’s decades of development.
Ong-Dijcks holds a degree from Ateneo de Manila University and the Philippine Institute of Interior Design. However, the artist found her voice in the Bay Area, where she taught herself to paint in oil and realized her dream of becoming an artist, according to the piano’s press release.

The community nonprofit, Redwood City Improvement Association, sponsored the piano through its Sounds and Tastes Campaign, which is focused on bringing artistic vibrancy and cultural experiences to Redwood City. Central to the program is the installation of painted community pianos, with Ong-Dijcks’ piano the second of three that will be unveiled in the area.
