North Star Academy, which has roughly 530 students in grades 3 through 8, has been ranked as the No. 1 school in the Golden State, according to a U.S. News & World Report.

The school was also ranked as No. 6 in top middle schools. It was among 5,534 elementary schools ranked and 2,319 middle schools in California by the national publication.

In a statement, North Star Academy Principal Sara Shackel said she was "honored to be recognized for something that we love doing every day – being part of the North Star Family."

“Every day, I have the joy of witnessing our scholars, as they explore their love of learning, and our teachers and staff, as they work tirelessly to create an educational setting that fosters excellence in our students," she said.

North Star Academy is a magnet school, where minorities make up about 52% of the school's population, according to the report. The genders are split, 50% boys and 50% girls. About 96% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math and reading.
