The Redwood City Downtown Lions Club in conjunction with the Post 105 American Legion is hosting a Veterans Day Celebration this Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Courthouse Square.
San Mateo County is also hosting its 6th Annual Veteran Recognition Event on Wednesday with keynote speaker Michael A. Rocco, president and CEO of the Marines' Memorial Association & Foundation. Rocco, a retired three-star Marine Corps general served 37 years as an active-duty Marine in multiple tours around the world, according to a press release. In observance of the Veterans Day holiday, Redwood City Hall and the administrative offices of the police, fire, and public works departments and all libraries will be closed. While the administrative offices will be closed, emergency services will continue to operate.
Veterans Day honors the 19 million vets in the United States, according to a city newsletter. The holiday is a way to show appreciation our country's appreciation for the courage and patriotism of everyone who has served in the military.
When first celebrated as Armistice Day, the day marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918.
