Good morning, Redwood City!

Portside pollutants

Earlier this month a big fire broke out at Sims Metal, a metal recycling center down near the Port. Two dozen fire responders were sent to put out the blaze, which caused some explosions and sent up a dark plume of smoke that could be seen from miles away.

In a new development, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control announced that it has ordered Sims to investigate—and address—the release of hazardous wastes and pollutants from its operations. In a letter, the department referenced inspections that found concentrations of lead, zinc and copper that “exceeded hazardous waste levels” and expressed concern over the health impacts.

You can read more about that here, and we’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops.
