Two suspects are in custody following a hit-and-run incident in Atherton that caused major injuries to two people Friday afternoon, police said.
In the afternoon on Aug. 11, Menlo Park police received a report of theft at the LensCrafters in Menlo Park, with the suspects and their vehicle described as heading northbound on El Camino Real toward Atherton, according to a statement from Atherton Police Department.
Soon after, Atherton police received reports of a major injury accident at the intersection of El Camino Real and Atherton Avenue. Dispatchers learned that two people involved in the collision were seen fleeing the scene, and one of the vehicles in the collision matched the description of the getaway vehicle from the Menlo Park theft.
When officers arrived on scene, three vehicles were severely damaged and one driver was still trapped inside a car. Menlo Park firefighters provided medical assistance and two people were transported to Stanford Hospital with major injuries, the statement said.
Officers from both Atherton and Menlo Park police departments worked together to search for the suspects, aided by dashcam video provided by a witness at the scene.
“A few hours later, an Atherton resident that lives near the scene of the collision contacted the police department to report two unknown subjects were in their backyard,” the statement said. “The subjects were contacted by Atherton officers and confirmed as the driver and passenger that fled the scene of the collision.”
The driver was taken into custody by Atherton police on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, providing a false name to police and a parole hold. Both suspects were also booked on theft-related charges by Menlo Park police. Police did not release the names of the suspects.
