The San Mateo Board of Supervisors appointed members to its 2026 Charter Review Committee on Tuesday.

Every eight years, the county must form a committee of residents responsible for submitting recommendations to amend or revise the county charter to the Board of Supervisors. The 2026 committee has 19 members, including five from each county district and 14 additional members, the board said, reflecting a range of “community interests and lived experience.” More than 40 residents applied to be on the committee, according to county officials.

The supervisors unanimously voted to allow the committee to meet remotely. The committee will host up to six meetings over the next several months, all of which will be open to the public.

The Board encouraged the committee to take a bottom-up approach and declined to vote on the topics the committee was to review.

“Historically, when they’ve [Charter Review Committee] taken up these different items…we’ve always come up with a collaborative effort to address issues,” said District 5 Supervisor David Canepa.

Although the Board didn’t collectively approve specific items, supervisors may individually propose topics for the committee’s consideration.

Once the committee submits its final recommendations, the Board will decide whether to adopt the ordinances. If any amendments are accepted, they will appear on a special election county ballot for voter approval.
