David Canepa, San Mateo County District 5 supervisor, announced Thursday morning that he is running to be the county’s next assessor-county clerk-recorder and chief elections officer.

Canepa’s decision to throw his hat into the ring comes just after Mark Church, who currently holds these positions, shared that he will not seek another term.

“I will have big shoes to fill,” said Canepa, in reference to Church’s tenure as Clerk-Recorder and Chief Elections Officer. “I am thrilled to be running and honored by the prospect of succeeding him in this extremely important office.”

Canepa’s priorities as assessor, according to his campaign news release, would be to produce “fair, accurate and timely” property assessments, protect local revenue for services like public safety and roads, and help eligible homeowners — specifically seniors, veterans, people with disabilities and nonprofits — receive property tax exemptions for which they qualify.

A fourth-generation San Mateo County resident, Canepa has served on the Board of Supervisors since 2017, after serving as mayor of Daly City. On the board, Canepa has worked to improve health care, increase affordable housing units, address homelessness and better ready the county for natural disasters, according to a county press release.
