A local resident who died recently includes:
James David Eakin, 98, a longtime Portola Valley resident and educator who was born in Oregon, who served in the U.S. Army in occupied Japan and came away with great admiration for Japanese culture, who studied at the Sorbonne and who in the early 1950s embarked on a 100-day bike tour through France, Spain, Italy and Austria, who worked as head of language department at San Mateo’s Aragon High School and who in 1968 became one of the founding members at Cañada College, who later tutored foreign tech workers in English and who loved golf, cooking, Italian cooking and discussing the finer points of grammar, died on May 21.
