Video game company Electronic Arts (EA), headquartered in Redwood Shores, is reportedly slashing around 400 employees and closing down BioWare, a gaming development studio, after more than 30 years.

The upcoming “Mass Effect” game has been canceled, which would have been the fifth since 2007.

After becoming a privately traded company in August, which sold for $55 billion, EA emailed employees on Wednesday, Oct. 21, that the company would be laying off around 400 people, including around 50 at BioWare, in order to focus on more lucrative projects, Bloomberg reported.

“After more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending,” BioWare published in a statement on X. “There is nothing easy about writing those words.”

The statement included that the company’s focus right now is on “our incredibly talented team” and on “supporting one another through this transition.”

EA’s email said the company would try to help employees impacted by the cuts find another role internally, according to Bloomberg.

Redwood City’s communications manager, Nadine Abousalem, said on Friday, Oct. 23, that the city has not received a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) report indicating that Redwood City positions are affected.

EA went private last year in the deal led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, investment firm Silver Lake Partners and Affinity Partners, an investment firm run by Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.

EA and BioWare did not respond to the Pulse’s request for comment.
