Two people were recovering from gunshot wounds in East Palo Alto on Saturday afternoon after a shooting incident that involved two vehicles on Clarke Avenue, according to the East Palo Alto Police Department.

A suspect in the shooting fled from the scene but was tracked to San Joaquin County and booked into the San Mateo County Jail, the department said Sunday.

Police received the report about the shooting at about 3:40 p.m. on May 9, when the city’s ShotSpotter activation system notified the department of gunfire on the 2300 block of Clarke Avenue, near Runnymede Street, according to a news release. Concurrently, officers received a report about a man suffering from a gunshot wound at a residence in East Palo Alto. They arrived and determined that the man was connected to the Clarke Avenue shooting, police said.

Police used automated license plate readers to identify both vehicles and tracked the suspect vehicle as it left East Palo Alto and traveled through Hayward, Tracy and, ultimately, to Stockton, police said. There, a San Joaquin County Sheriff’s deputy found the vehicle and the suspect.

The deputy also found a handgun and methamphetamines in the car. The person in the car, a 35-year-old man, had been released from state prison on April 18 for post-release community supervision.

Both people who were shot survived the incident and continued to recover on Sunday, police said.

The investigation remains active and East Palo Alto police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has information related to it to call 650-321-1112. They can also leave anonymous tips by calling 650-409-6792 or by emailing epa@tipnow.org.
