The community will gather to honor and remember America’s fallen heroes at Redwood City’s Historic Union Cemetery on May 27.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony, a tradition since 1889, will commence at 10 a.m. at the Civil War-era cemetery located at 316 Woodside Road.

Initially known as Decoration Day, this event has long provided the Redwood City community an opportunity to honor America’s veterans.

The ceremony will feature keynote speaker Jim Hartnell, who will address attendees alongside traditional patriotic music. Participants will also decorate soldiers’ graves with flowers and American flags, symbolizing the community’s respect and gratitude.

A highlight of the event is the firing of the anvil, a much-anticipated grand finale that echoes the day’s historical significance. The entire ceremony is expected to last about one hour.

In addition to the Memorial Day observance, attendees can view the winning entries from the annual Photo Contest, which will be on display. Following the ceremony, visitors are invited to tour Union Cemetery, listed on the National and California Registers of Historic Sites.

Due to limited parking in the area, organizers encourage carpooling or biking to the event. This local observance provides a meaningful way for the Redwood City community to come together and reflect on the sacrifices made by America’s service members.
